Unlike meltdowns, which are more outward expressions of distress, shutdowns are a response to overwhelm where the brain powers down.
It can look like:
🔹 Struggling to speak or respond
🔹 Feeling distant, numb, or disconnected
🔹 Needing to withdraw and be alone
🔹 Mental fog or decision fatigue
🔹 Extreme exhaustion
They’re often caused by sensory overload, emotional stress, or social exhaustion—and they’re completely valid.
If you want to understand shutdowns better (or support someone who experiences them), I’ve written a blog post covering triggers, signs, and recovery tips.

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed that your brain just shut down? Words wouldn’t come, decisions felt impossible, and all you could do was retreat?
That’s an autistic shutdown—a response to extreme sensory, emotional, or mental overload.
It’s not laziness, weakness, or something to “push through.”
It’s your nervous system saying, I need a break.
I’ve just written a new blog post about what shutdowns are, what triggers them, and how to recover with self-compassion. If this resonates with you (or someone you know), you’ll find it helpful.
